David W. Larson
2009 Sal LoBaido Volunteer Service Award Recipient
The Star of Boreas is pleased to recognize David W. Larson whose life time achievements personify and give special meaning to the word "VOLUNTEER". The Sal LoBaido Volunteer Service Award, established over twenty years ago by the Wintertainment Foundation, is presented to those who have demonstrated a life time commitment to their country, their city and to the Saint Paul Winter Carnival.
David W. Larson was employed by the City of Saint Paul Division of Parks and Recreation for most of his career, retiring as Supervisor. In that capacity he worked with multiple community organizations promoting the health, education and spirituality of our community's children. This was accomplished, in part, through his involvement with organizations such as the Roseville Lutheran Church, the Youth Services Bureau, the Wilder Foundation, the North End Boxing Assocation, and as a coach of many athletic teams as well as a significant involvement in Scouting among his many other activities.
This community activist promoted his country by being part of the United States Military for over thirty-four years as a member of the Minnesota Army National Guard and the United States Army Reserve. His most recent military assignment was as Director of Plans, Operations and Training for the State of Minnesota, Army National Guard. Mr. Larson has a current rank of Retired Military Officer (Colonel - Army). He is particularly proud of his military career, graduating from the United States Army Command and General Staff College as well as participating in multiple training programs all leading to positions of command throughout his military career. His dedication to his fellow military officers has resulted in multiple lifetime memberships in military service organizations.
David W. Larson's dedication to his community is further demonstrated through his activism in the Saint Paul Winter Carnival. Starting as a King's Guard in 1970, Mr. Larson moved through the ranks to become Prime Minister in 1981. He continued his involvement with the Saint Paul Winter Carnival's multiple activities including its Festival Cabinet, Senior and Junior Royalty Programs, and Carnival evens such as the Softball on Ice, Ice Slide, Tax Collectors and the Judging of Pageants. To cap his activities over his thirty nine year period of involvement with the Saint Paul Winter Carnival, David Larson currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Saint Paul Festival & Heritage Foundation.
The Star of Boreas organization is very proud to presend to David W. Larson the 2009 Sal Lobaido Volunteer Service Award!
